Joycelyn joined Ocean Choice’s Quality Assurance team as a Quality Assurance Coordinator in November of 2022. Since this time, Joycelyn has demonstrated an unwavering passion for everything quality related.
Having graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Joycelyn’s love for learning did not end there. In 2020, Joycelyn graduated from the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University’s graduate program with an Advanced Diploma in Food Safety.
Upon graduating, Joycelyn moved from her home community of Conception Bay South to Hermitage, a small town on the south coast of Newfoundland, where she worked at a salmon aquaculture primary processing facility. From there, working with the same aquaculture company, she moved to New Brunswick where she continued to spearhead quality.
For Joycelyn, like so many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, the call of home beckoned. Luckily for us, this led her to Ocean Choice. Joycelyn fondly recalls the sense of pride her pop held for living and growing up in Newfoundland. It was her pops’ fierce pride for Newfoundland that led to Joycelyn’s own passion for the fishery.
Joining our team of quality and food safety experts, Joycelyn leads Quality Assurance for Ocean Choice’s fleet of offshore factory freezer vessels. Working in collaboration with the Factory Managers, onshore vessel management and Ocean Choice’s sales teams, Joycelyn is responsible for ensuring quality assurance and food safety is maintained at every single step – from ocean to market.
When asked about what provides her with satisfaction and happiness at work, Joycelyn says that working with a company that values and prioritizes quality and food safety practices makes her job very easy. In addition, she feels extremely lucky to have the opportunity to continuously learn and grow in her role by working with highly capable and knowledgeable people who have decades of experience.
“As a solutions-focused team player who always has a smile on her face and a positive outlook, Joycelyn has a natural ability to motivate and drive improvement,” says Kevin Sweeney, Vessel Factory Manager. “We are producing food that feeds families around the world and ensuring we produce the highest quality seafood is our top priority. Having a resource such as Joycelyn has been invaluable,” adds Sweeney.
From her very first day on the job, it was abundantly clear that Joycelyn’s passion for learning would propel her into action. With multiple degrees under her belt, Joycelyn’s love for learning is something that she has been able to instill with the people she works with. In her first year with Ocean Choice, she was selected to participate in the Fishery Council of Canada’s Future Leaders Program, something that she says, “expanded her understanding of the complexities of the seafood sector.” Joycelyn has also spearheaded Ocean Choice’s participation in the Skills Training Across Canada program that is delivered by Food Processing Skills Canada where we had 24 employees from across our operations successfully complete the program.
Today, Joycelyn once again resides in her home community of Conception Bay South with her cat, Fergus. In her spare time, her favorite thing to do is to spend time with her niece, Maya and if there’s a dance floor, she wants to be in the know! “I’m there and I’m going to boogie!”
It is safe to say that Joycelyn is happy to once again be working so close to home.
