Harvested on Newfoundland’s historic Grand Banks, the Yellowtail flounder fishery continues to meet the robust requirements of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a global nonprofit that works to end overfishing around the world.
Yellowtail flounder finds a home in select European and North American markets where customers are increasingly conscious of the origins of the food on their plates. “Customers demand that their seafood is sustainably and responsibly sourced,” explains Blaine Sullivan, President, Ocean Choice. “MSC sustainability certification ensures accessibility and competitiveness in discerning global markets.”
MSC is the most globally recognized program for wild sustainable seafood and meets the highest international guidelines for credible certification and ecolabelling programs. The rigorous assessment process to be certified sustainable scrutinizes all aspects of the fishery to ensure they comply with internationally accepted sustainability principles for fisheries management, stock health and stable ecosystems.
“With more and more Canadian seafood becoming MSC certified, it not only signals to global markets that the Canadian fishing industry can meet their requirements, but also that we share their values in terms of sustainably harvested wild seafood,” says Carey Bonnell, VP Sustainability and Engagement, Ocean Choice.
Ocean Choice takes great pride in ensuring its fisheries operate in a responsible and sustainable manner. As a global leader in responsible management and sustainable fisheries, with over 90% of the species the company harvests MSC certified or under a robust Fisheries Improvement Project, Ocean Choice’s commitment to sustainability drives investment and decision making.
The Yellowtail flounder fishery has been fully re-built since the 1990’s and has been MSC certified for well over a decade. Yellowtail flounder is sold globally and is recognized as a versatile consumer favorite in both retail and foodservice markets.
“Ocean Choice continues to exemplify leadership when it comes to their commitment to sustainable fisheries, certified seafood and the health of our oceans,” says Kurtis Hayne, Program Director, MSC. “The re-building of the Yellowtail flounder fishery clearly demonstrates Ocean Choice’s unwavering commitment to a sustainable future for the entire Grand Banks ecosystem.”
Sustainably harvested on Ocean Choice’s fleet of offshore groundfish vessels, the Calvert and Katsheshuk II; and processed at our shore-based processing facility, the Yellowtail flounder fishery supports rural, coastal communities and families working in the fishery.
