As a business entirely dependent on a healthy ocean, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Without a healthy ocean, there wouldn’t be a future for our business and our 1,500 employees.

Ocean Choice received its official Green Marine certificate at the 17th annual GreenTech conference that was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 5, 2024. Making Ocean Choice the first fishing company in North America to complete the rigors process and successfully receive the externally verified certification.

“From day one, our commitment to sustainability and protecting the marine ecosystem has been the bedrock of our business,” says Blaine Sullivan, President, Ocean Choice. “The Green Marine certification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the people working across the entire company – in our processing facilities, on our vessels and in our offices – we all believe in and stand behind our responsibility to the marine environment. Without this deep commitment, certifications such as Green Marine would not be possible.”

At Ocean Choice, nothing is more important than protecting the ocean and the planet. This is why we make every effort to follow world-class sustainability practices, we minimize our impact on the environment, and we make investments in science and technology to continuously improve our operations. “We work tirelessly with government, research scientists, and other stakeholders to help conserve and grow the seafood resources that feed the world,” says Ocean Choice’s VP of Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations, Carey Bonnell.

Green Marine is a voluntary environmental certification program for the North American marine industry. The program aims to guide the maritime industry towards environmental excellence by encouraging maritime enterprises to adopt concrete measurable actions that go beyond regulatory obligations.

The program covers maritime activities and related land-based operations, which encompasses several types of maritime enterprises, including ports, the Seaway corporations, ship owners, terminals, and shipyards in North America. The program deals specifically with issues such as biodiversity protection, air, water and soil quality, and community relations.

“Green Marine brings together hundreds of members from different backgrounds that all share the same objective: to improve the maritime industry’s environmental performance through concrete and measurable action.,” says David Bolduc, Green Marine’s President. “We congratulate Ocean Choice on achieving its Green Marine certification and to being the first fishing company to do so. We look forward to working with Ocean Choice as the company continues to lead the fishing sector for environmental stewardship.”

We employ 1,500 people from hundreds of coastal communities, and source seafood from 1,900 independent harvesters. A strong, sustainable fishery makes it possible for them to live, work, and thrive here – with their families, where they belong. Ocean Choice plans to be here for them, and their children and grandchildren, for the long haul.
